Three-Point Crutch Gait: Where to Bear Weight
Physiologic Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: Bear weight on the unaffected leg
Why this is the answer
In a three-point gait (used when one leg cannot bear weight), the client advances both crutches with the affected leg, then bears weight through the crutches and the unaffected leg.
The bigger concept
Match the crutch gait to the weight-bearing order: three-point gait is for non-weight-bearing on one leg (both crutches and the affected leg move together, then the strong leg); two-point and four-point gaits are for partial weight bearing on both legs; swing-through is for paralysis or both legs restricted. In every gait, weight goes through the hand grips, never the axillae, and the crutch tips land 6 inches to the side and front.
