Guided Imagery for Chronic Pain: Teaching Check
Physiologic Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: "I'll think about my grandfather's farm to reduce pain."
Why this is the answer
Guided imagery uses a pleasant, calming mental image to redirect attention away from pain and promote relaxation, an effective nonpharmacologic pain-relief strategy.
The bigger concept
Nonpharmacologic pain management is a Fundamentals staple. Guided imagery asks the client to concentrate on a vivid, pleasant scene that engages several senses, shifting attention away from pain and lowering sympathetic arousal. It sits alongside relaxation breathing, distraction, music, heat and cold, and massage. These methods complement — not replace — prescribed analgesics, and the PN/VN documents pain scores before and after to show effect.
