Bolus Enteral Feeding: Formula Temperature
Physiologic Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: Ensure that the formula is at room temperature
Why this is the answer
Room-temperature formula reduces GI discomfort, such as cramping, that can occur when cold formula is instilled.
The bigger concept
Bolus feedings deliver a set volume by gravity over about 15–30 minutes. Before each feeding: verify tube placement, check gastric residual per policy, and elevate the head of bed to at least 30–45°. Give formula at room temperature to prevent cramping, flush with 30 mL of water before and after, and keep the client upright for 30–60 minutes afterward. Report nausea, distention, or a large residual to the RN.
