Responding to 'I Don't Know What to Expect'

Psychosocial Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set

Question: A client says, "I just don't know what to expect." Which response should the nurse make?
"This must be a very difficult time for you."

Correct answer: "This must be a very difficult time for you."

Why this is the answer

This response reflects empathy and acknowledges the client's emotional distress, opening the door to further therapeutic communication.

The bigger concept

Empathic acknowledgment ('This must be a very difficult time for you') names the feeling without minimizing it and keeps the door open. On the exam, avoid responses that offer false reassurance ('Everything will be fine'), shift focus to the nurse or others, give premature information, or ask 'why.' Once the feeling is acknowledged, the nurse can then ask what the client would like to know.
