Teaching a Distracted Client: What to Say
Psychosocial Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: "Let's talk about what you're thinking."
Why this is the answer
Addressing the distraction directly with an open-ended, therapeutic response helps refocus the client and uncover underlying concerns before continuing teaching.
The bigger concept
Learning cannot happen when the client is preoccupied, in pain, or anxious — readiness to learn is the first thing to assess. An open-ended invitation ('Let's talk about what you're thinking') acknowledges the distraction and often uncovers the real concern. Continuing the lecture, postponing without asking, or scolding the client for not listening are the nontherapeutic distractors.
