Postmortem Care: The Dentures Mistake
Psychosocial Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: Removing the client's dentures from their mouth
Why this is the answer
Dentures should be left in place (or reinserted promptly) during postmortem care to maintain the client's natural facial appearance for family viewing.
The bigger concept
Postmortem care prepares the body for viewing and for the funeral home while treating the client with dignity. Leave or reinsert dentures so the face keeps its natural shape, close the eyes, place a small pillow under the head, position the body supine with arms at the sides, remove tubes only as facility policy allows, bathe and cover the body, and attach identification. Follow the family's cultural and religious wishes throughout.
