Exam Guide
Standard Walker Fit: Elbows Slightly Bent
Physiologic Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: "I'll keep my elbows slightly bent when I grasp the walker."
Why this is the answer
Slight elbow flexion (about 15–30°) when gripping the walker's handgrips confirms proper walker height/fit and allows adequate arm strength for support and stability.
The bigger concept
Walker teaching is about fit and sequence. The handgrips should sit at wrist level when the arms hang at the sides, producing about 15–30° of elbow flexion. The client lifts and places the walker about 6–8 inches ahead, steps in with the weaker leg first, then the stronger leg, and never pulls up on the walker to stand. Watch for rubber tips that are worn and for the client leaning too far forward.
