Responding to a Client Who Refuses Surgery
Psychosocial Needs · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: "I will inform your provider of your decision."
Why this is the answer
Clients have the right to refuse treatment. The nurse's role is to respect autonomy, document the refusal, and notify the provider — not to pressure or coerce the client.
The bigger concept
A competent adult can refuse any treatment, including one already consented to. The nurse's job is to respect that autonomy, make sure the client understands the consequences, document the refusal in the client's words, and notify the provider — not to persuade, threaten, or call the family. Responses that pressure the client or imply they will be abandoned are the wrong answers.
