Setting Up a Sterile Field: Steps in Order
Safety & Infection Control · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct sequence:
Why this is the answer
This sequence preserves sterility by opening the flap farthest from the nurse first and the flap closest to the nurse last, so the nurse never reaches over the exposed sterile field.
The bigger concept
Ordering items on sterile technique test one idea: never reach over the field. That is why the flap farthest from you opens first and the flap nearest you opens last — each move keeps your arm outside the sterile area. Work above waist level on a dry surface, touch only the outer 1-inch border, add supplies by dropping them from 6 inches above, and consider the field contaminated if it gets wet or is left unattended.
