Calculating and Classifying BMI

Health Assessment & Documentation · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set

Question: A nurse is calculating a client's BMI. The client weighs 95 kg (209.4 lb) and is 172 cm (5 ft 8 in) tall. The nurse should classify the client as:
Obesity class I (BMI 32.1)

Correct answer: Obesity class I (BMI 32.1)

Why this is the answer

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Convert height: 172 cm = 1.72 m. Square it: 1.72 × 1.72 = 2.958 m². Divide: 95 kg ÷ 2.958 m² ≈ 32.1 kg/m². A BMI of 30.0–34.9 is classified as obesity class I, so 32.1 falls in that range.

The bigger concept

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Know the cut-offs: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30–34.9 obesity class I, 35–39.9 class II, and 40 or above class III. BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis — it does not distinguish muscle from fat — so the PN/VN reports it alongside waist circumference and other findings rather than labeling the client.
