Expressive Aphasia: When a Client Cannot Name Objects
Health Assessment & Documentation · Question from the ATI PN Fundamentals 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: Expressive aphasia
Why this is the answer
Expressive (Broca's) aphasia involves difficulty producing or finding words, including naming objects, while comprehension typically remains relatively intact.
The bigger concept
Neurologic data collection distinguishes expressive (Broca's) aphasia — the client understands but cannot find or form the words — from receptive (Wernicke's) aphasia, where speech is fluent but comprehension is impaired, and from dysarthria, a motor problem with articulation. For expressive aphasia, give the client time, offer yes/no questions and communication boards, and do not finish their sentences.
