What the 2026 ATI RN Nutrition proctored exam covers
ATI organizes Nutrition around five content areas. Our 60-question practice exam distributes questions across them in a similar proportion to what you'll see on test day. The 2026 series leans harder on Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) item types — case studies and extended multiple response — so our 2026 exam includes those formats alongside classic multiple choice.
Basic Nutrition Principles & Nutrients
The RN Nutrition exam tests core concepts like macronutrients, micronutrients, fluid and electrolyte balance, and how to read a nutrition label or diet order accurately. Expect questions on vitamin/mineral deficiencies and toxicities, and which foods are good sources of specific nutrients.
Nutrition Across the Lifespan
Nutritional needs shift across infancy, childhood, pregnancy/lactation, and older adulthood. Expect questions on infant feeding and introduction of solids, increased caloric and protein needs in pregnancy, and age-related risks like decreased thirst sensation and reduced caloric needs in older adults.
Therapeutic & Modified Diets
This is one of the heaviest-weighted domains: diabetic diets, renal diets (sodium/potassium/phosphorus/protein restriction), cardiac diets (sodium and fat restriction), low-residue and high-fiber diets, and dysphagia diet levels. The 2026 series often frames these as case-study scenarios requiring you to select multiple appropriate interventions rather than a single answer.
Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition
Covers indications for enteral (tube) feeding versus parenteral (IV) nutrition, tube placement verification, aspiration precautions, and complications like refeeding syndrome and dumping syndrome. These questions often test priority nursing actions when a complication is suspected, frequently presented as multi-part NGN case studies in the 2026 series.
Drug-Nutrient Interactions & Nutritional Status
Certain medications interact with specific nutrients or foods — warfarin and vitamin K, MAOIs and tyramine, and grapefruit juice with several drug classes are classic exam topics. Also expect questions on recognizing signs of malnutrition, obesity-related risk factors, and basic nutrition support for wound healing.
Sample questions from the 2026 RN Nutrition exam
Rationale: New distention and nausea suggest possible feeding intolerance; assess before changing the feeding plan, rather than escalating or stopping the feeding outright. (Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition — case-study style item)
Rationale: Clients with chronic kidney disease typically need restricted sodium, potassium, and phosphorus to reduce the workload on the kidneys. (Therapeutic & Modified Diets)
Rationale: Green leafy vegetables like spinach are high in vitamin K, which can affect warfarin's anticoagulant effect. Consistency matters more than elimination. (Drug-Nutrient Interactions)
ATI RN Nutrition 2026 exam FAQ
How is the 2026 exam different from the 2023 exam?
The 2026 content-mastery series adds Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) item types — case studies and extended multiple response — alongside classic multiple choice. Programs that still use the earlier series should use the 2023 exam instead.
How many questions are on the ATI RN Nutrition 2026 proctored exam?
ATI's official exam length varies by program, so a 60-question practice exam gives you a realistic full-length run covering the major nutrition content areas. Your program sets the exact count and time limit — check your syllabus.
Is this the actual ATI 2026 exam?
No. This is an independent, original practice exam written to cover the same content areas and question style as ATI's 2026 RN Nutrition content-mastery exam. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a reproduction of Assessment Technologies Institute's proprietary exam content.
What's the highest-yield content on this exam?
Therapeutic and modified diets (matching a diagnosis to the correct diet) and drug-nutrient interactions remain the highest-yield areas, now often tested through case-study and select-all-that-apply formats rather than single-answer multiple choice.
