Exam Guide
Protecting the Eyes in Graves' Disease Exophthalmos
Endocrine · Question from the ATI RN Medical-Surgical 2023 Proctored Exam study set
Correct answer: C. Use artificial tears
Why this is the answer
Exophthalmos leaves the eyes bulging and unable to close completely, which dries and irritates the cornea — artificial tears and lubricating ointment keep the surface protected and prevent ulceration. Restricting fluids (A) has nothing to do with eye protection. Applying eye patches (B) is actually risky here: because the eyelids can't close fully over the bulging eye, a patch can rub against and further damage an already-exposed cornea rather than protecting it. Administering aspirin (D) doesn't address the underlying dryness or exposure at all.
The bigger concept
Exophthalmos in Graves' Disease is a mechanical eye-protection problem, not a systemic one — the nursing priority is keeping the exposed cornea moist and intact, since the eyelids can no longer do that job on their own.
