What the 2023 ATI RN Maternal / Newborn proctored exam covers
ATI organizes Maternal / Newborn around five content domains. Our 70-question practice exam distributes questions across them in a similar proportion to what you'll see on test day. The 2023 series is predominantly classic four-option multiple choice with a smaller number of select-all-that-apply items, and our 2023 exam matches that mix.
Antepartum Care & High-Risk Pregnancy
Covers routine prenatal care plus high-risk conditions: preeclampsia/eclampsia, gestational diabetes, placenta previa, and abruptio placentae. Know the hallmark differentiators ATI loves to test — painless bright-red bleeding points to placenta previa, while painful dark bleeding points to abruptio placentae — and the priority intervention for each (magnesium sulfate prevents seizures in preeclampsia; it does not lower blood pressure).
Intrapartum Care & Labor/Delivery
Focuses on fetal heart rate monitoring, stages of labor, and pain-management options. The VEAL CHOP mnemonic (Variable = Cord compression, Early = Head compression, Accelerations = Okay, Late = Placental insufficiency) is the single most tested framework in this domain — expect a strip-interpretation question that hinges on matching a deceleration pattern to its cause and nursing response.
Postpartum Care & Complications
Fundal assessment and hemorrhage prevention dominate this domain. A boggy or displaced fundus is the classic scenario — before assuming uterine atony, rule out a full bladder, since a distended bladder is a common and easily-corrected cause of fundal displacement. Also expect questions on lochia progression, breastfeeding physiology, and postpartum mood disorders versus baby blues.
Newborn Assessment & Care
Apgar scoring at 1 and 5 minutes is guaranteed to appear — know the five components (heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, reflex irritability, color) and their 0–2 point scale cold. Beyond Apgar, expect thermoregulation, gestational-age assessment, and priority monitoring for at-risk newborns, including infants of diabetic mothers who are watched closely for hypoglycemia.
Medication Safety in Pregnancy & Lactation
Covers which medications are safe, contraindicated, or require monitoring during pregnancy and breastfeeding, plus core OB pharmacology: Rho(D) immune globulin (RhoGAM) for Rh-negative mothers, magnesium sulfate for preeclampsia, betamethasone for fetal lung maturity, and oxytocin for labor induction or postpartum hemorrhage control.
Sample questions from the 2023 Maternal / Newborn exam
Rationale: Magnesium Sulfate is used primarily as a central nervous system depressant to prevent eclamptic seizures, not as an antihypertensive.
Rationale: Variable decelerations are associated with cord compression. Use the mnemonic VEAL CHOP (Variable = Cord).
Rationale: A displaced fundus usually indicates a full bladder, which prevents the uterus from contracting effectively; emptying the bladder is the first step.
ATI RN Maternal / Newborn 2023 exam FAQ
How is the 2023 exam different from the 2026 exam?
The 2023 series uses the earlier Maternal / Newborn blueprint and is mostly classic multiple choice plus select-all-that-apply. Programs that moved to the newer series should use the 2026 exam, which adds NGN-style case studies and ordering items.
How many questions are on the ATI Maternal / Newborn 2023 proctored exam?
ATI's official exam typically runs 60–70 scored items plus a small number of unscored pretest items, so a 70-question practice exam gives you a realistic full-length run. Your program sets the exact count and time limit — check your syllabus.
Which version does my school use?
Ask your instructor or check the assessment name inside your ATI account — the series year is shown on the assessment card. Not sure yet? The RN Maternal / Newborn overview lists all three Maternal / Newborn products so you can compare.
Is this the actual ATI 2023 exam?
No. This is an independent, original practice exam written to cover the same content areas and question style as ATI's 2023 Maternal / Newborn content-mastery exam. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a reproduction of Assessment Technologies Institute's proprietary exam content.
Should I also get the 42-question Study Guide?
The ATI RN Maternal / Newborn Proctored Exam Study Guide (42 questions with rationales) is the broad content review; this 70-question exam is the timed dress rehearsal. Most students do the study guide first, then sit the exam for their version a few days before test day.
