What Is the ATI CMS Fundamentals Exam?

"ATI CMS" trips up a lot of nursing students. Here's what it means and how it's different from your school's practice assessments.

1

What CMS stands for

CMS stands for Content Mastery Series — ATI's name for its individual proctored exams, one per content area. On the RN side that includes Adult Medical-Surgical, Community Health, Fundamentals, Leadership and Management, Maternal Newborn, Mental Health, Nutrition, Pharmacology, and Pediatric Nursing; the PN/VN series mirrors these at the practical-nurse scope. "ATI CMS Fundamentals," specifically, is the secure, proctored exam covering foundational nursing concepts, safety, and basic patient care — the topic covered on this site's RN and PN/VN Fundamentals study guides.

2

CMS proctored exam vs. the open-book practice assessment

Each CMS content area actually has two different attempts, and it's easy to mix them up. The practice assessment is open-book, untimed in most programs, and meant as low-stakes rehearsal. The proctored exam is the secure, timed, supervised version — taken in a lab or via remote proctoring — and it's the one your program typically grades or requires a proficiency level on. Doing well on the practice assessment doesn't guarantee the same result on the proctored version, since the settings and stakes are different.

3

Where Fundamentals fits among the other CMS content areas

Fundamentals is usually the first CMS exam nursing students sit, since it covers the foundational concepts — health assessment, safety, physiologic and psychosocial needs — that later content areas (Medical-Surgical, Pharmacology, and so on) build on. Programs often sequence it early in the curriculum for that reason.

ATI CMS FAQ

1

Is CMS the same as the proctored exam?

The proctored exam is the secure version of a CMS content area's assessment. "CMS" refers to the whole content-area exam family; the proctored exam is specifically the timed, supervised attempt within it, as opposed to the open-book practice assessment.

2

Do all nursing programs use CMS?

Most RN and PN/VN programs that use ATI as their standardized testing partner include CMS exams in their curriculum, but the specific content areas required, their sequencing, and how much they count toward your grade are set by each individual program.

3

What's a good CMS Fundamentals score?

ATI reports proficiency levels rather than a single "good" percentage, and each nursing program sets its own required level for the course — ask your instructor what level they require.
